Fairest of All (Villain Tales) Book Review

Mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all…

Book one of the Villain Tales series by Serena Valentino focuses on the Evil Queen from Snow White and how it was she became so evil.

First of all this is only a short book at 250 pages so made for a fairly quick read. With the introduction of new characters the Odd Sisters you will have to read the series in order which consists of Fairest of All, The Beast Within, Poor Unfortunate Soul, Mistress of All Evil then finally Mother Knows Best.

Whilst I enjoyed the book I think it’s fair to say it did take a while to actually see why the Queen turned evil (over halfway through) and there’s an interesting twist on her relationship with the magic mirror.

The book consists of a lot of short chapters which could be irritating at times and the writing style is quite basic so it could be read by a younger audience. It also felt like the ending was rushed due to the nature of the shorter chapters but if you have seen the film you can fill in the gaps yourself.

I wish it had been more of a darker read but I am 26 so maybe I’m not the target audience.

I’d rate it 3/5, it’s a nice read for Disney fans but it’s not a must have.

DW Home The Macabre Skull Candle Review

First of all The Macabre candle by DW Home looks amazing and is perfect the Halloween, it’s also affordable with the price tag of £6.99.

DW Home The Macabre Candle

The scent is Sparkling Cider which I must admit wouldn’t usually be my first choice of scents but it does smell really nice and sweet and does actually make a great candle scent; once the candle has ran out then this will make a great holder.

It is not a strong overpowering scent by any means which is down to personal choice, I prefer strong scents which fill the room but I still like this candle and it wouldn’t put me off repurchasing it.

I found this little gem in Homesense (UK) but you may also find them in TK Maxx (UK) or if you live in the US then DW Home have an official website.

Compared to other candle brands DW is not as strong with the scents I’ve tried so far but that’s not necessarily a bad thing as they are affordable and there’s tons of scents to choose from.

Makers of Wax Goods Pumpkin Candle Review

Halloween season is upon us and I love bringing out all my Halloween candles, my latest edition is from Makers of Wax Goods.

I’d never heard of this brand before but it’s an American Company which specialises in handmade goods. Here in the UK you can find their products in Homesense

Makers of Wax Goods Pumpkin Candle

I love the old fashioned labelling as it stands out from other brands. It’s a medium sized candle which crackles and smells amazing!

It’s pumpkin and spices which smells similar to Fireball sweets and within minutes of being lit for the first time I could strongly smell it and the scent lasted without weakening.

Makers of Wax Goods

I have been really into crackling candles lately and this one doesn’t disappoint although it can be a little noisy at times.

If you come across this brand I would definitely recommend giving them a try if you love scented candles as to me this brand could rival Yankee!

Delicious Destinations Jungle Body Mist: Gucci Bamboo Dupe?

If you read my May Favourites post then you’ll know that I’ve been loving the Delicious Destinations body mists. The body mists come in a range of different scents and retail for £3.99 for 100ml (currently £1.98 on offer).

Delicious Destinations Jungle Body Mist Gucci Bamboo Dupe

“Take a walk through the jungle where wild exotic fruit notes are tangled with tropical & enticing oriental floral tones”

For a 30ml of Gucci Bamboo you’re looking at around £49, for a 100ml of Jungle its around £3.99 at most.

Funnily enough there are no notes of kiwi or palm leaf in Gucci Bamboo which I find strange so they may share other notes not mentioned on the Jungle bottle but to me personally they smell so similar and I’d much rather pay £1.98/£3.99 instead of splashing out £50.

A great thing about the body mist is that it does tend to last well on clothes and is small enough to keep in your bag to spritz throughout the day, as it is cheap anyway it does not matter how often it gets used where as I don’t tend to overspray Gucci.

Does anybody else think its a good match?

Let me know any dupes you know of in the comments below! 🙂

Netflix Insatiable Body Shaming Comedy Controversy

A brand new Netflix dark comedy Insatiable due for an August release has caused outrage with its first trailer. Debbie Ryan plays Patty an overweight teenage girl who over the summer loses a lot of weight due to having her jaw wired shut, she returns to school and seeks revenge of those who bullied her.

First of all are we really doing  high school revenge plot again? that was already done badly in 13 Reasons Why and secondly why is it another cliché she’s a hot popular girl now she’s lost tons of weight (rolls eyes).

Netflix Insatiable Debbie Ryan

This might be described as a satirical or dark comedy but how awful is the body suit for the larger Patty they could have made her body look more realistic and why must it be she can only seek revenge on the bullies when she is thin, why seek revenge at all?

A lot of people feel this show is body shaming and will cause eating disorders amongst viewers who feel that if they are overweight they’ll also be bullied or that the only way to be accepted is to be thin and popular which I can agree with as it is an overly used narrative that you must look a certain way in high school to fit in.

It may not have been the creators intentions but couldn’t it have shown a larger confident girl happy with her weight or only changing her size because she wants to and not because she physically cant eat? Yes people get bullied at school due to their weight or appearance but this is giving audiences the green light to seek revenge, making them no better than the bullies or making people feel their worth is based on their size.

A petition is spreading over the internet to get the programme cancelled before it is even aired which just proves how much of a fail it is and that audiences are not okay with body shaming.

Netflix had the chance to positively represent body image and mental health and again it has fallen short in favour of the stereotypical narrative which needs to be redefined to cater to all audiences.

Wilkinson Sword Intuition Fab Review

The Wilkinson Sword Intuition Fab is one of the brand new razors on the market and features ‘bi-directional’ blades with the top half shaving up and the bottom half shaving down. It retails for £11.99 with packs of 3 blades also costing the same.

Wilkinson Sword Intuition Fab Blades

I’m a big fan of the original Intuition razor and love that this version has a water activated gel, it feels much nicer than shaving gel.

Wilkinson Sword Intuition Fab

The handle is made of soft rubber and is curved which makes it incredibly comfortable and easy to navigate in comparison to the original Intuition. I found that after the first use my skin was left feeling smooth without the need to moisturise afterwards and there were no irritations or shaving rashes.

Although I love both of the Intuition razors I would say this one slightly has the edge as it is easier to use due to the size of the razor head and glides better around the knee and ankle areas.

I would fully recommend this razor and think its perfect for everyday use or to even take away on holiday.

Uber Sonic Club Toothbrush Review

Hey everyone, the lovely people over at Uber Sonic kindly sent over one of their award winning sonic toothbrushes for me to review.

If you haven’t heard of Uber Sonic before then it is a new dental subscription service that costs £19 to start which sees you receive the sonic toothbrush and a gel whitening kit, then for £9 every other month you receive two new replacement brush heads unless you cancel your subscription.  If you don’t want to commit to a subscription then you can actually purchase it alone and all customers will get a whitening kit.

Uber Sonic Club Toothbrush and Whitening Kit

Firstly I think £19 is a great price to begin with as their are a whole lot of expensive brushes on the market and have you seen the cost of whitening kits? The toothbrush is very slim and the head has soft bristles which might not be everyone’s preference but unfortunately there isn’t an option for medium bristles etc… I personally like the soft bristles and I like the shape of the head as it really gives a good clean, my original electric toothbrush has a standard round head but I much prefer this one.

Uber Sonic Brush Head

Often enough I tend to forget to buy replacement heads until I actually need them so I think its a great idea having them delivered every other month so you can keep them aside until you need them.

Uber Sonic

The toothbrush comes well presented and has a nice stand, it isn’t flimsy cardboard like some toothbrushes come in and feels good quality like Ipad boxing if that makes sense. I have found it to have a great battery life and I haven’t actually had to charge it since receiving mine.

If you need a new electric toothbrush then I would highly recommend you check out Uber Sonic, it is developed with Dentists, German engineered and the first aluminium toothbrush.

Solait Medium Tan Wipes

I finally did it, something I thought I would never do… I used fake tan! For the first time ever I ventured out of my comfort zone and tried the Solait Medium Tan Wipes.

At first I was worried by the word ‘Medium’ was I going to to go orange or really dark? Well no I didn’t I was pleasantly surprised to have a nice sun kissed glow.

Solait Medium Tan Wipes

Lets start positive: They cost £2.99 and are cruelty free and vegan. They are easy to use (rub in a circular motion) and to me it was a great colour that wasn’t too dark although I wouldn’t think it is a medium colour more on the light-medium side.

The negatives: You can’t see the product on the skin so there isn’t any indication of any missed patches so I did end up streaky but that could be down to lack of experience using tanning products. It also made my face feel oily but I do have combination skin.

The colour develops after 4 hours and because you don’t have to hop in the shower to wash it off you can easily repeat the process to cover the streaks or to build up the colour if you want darker skin. I’ve had one shower since applying the tan and my skin although streaky is still holding the colour so it doesn’t fully wash away at first.

These wipes would be great for on the go or to use as a top up for tan you want to stop fading.

Primark meets Disney with Cogsworth Clock (Review)

Primark has been killing it lately with all of the Disney ranges available and one of my favourites is the Beauty and the Beast collection. I have been lucky enough to get Mrs Potts and both Chip mugs. Todays review is all about the Cogsworth Clock.

Cogsworth retails for £10 and is a fully working clock, he looks great and makes a great collectors piece. Although he is an actual clock I haven’t had the best of luck with him, the battery does not fit correctly in the back so he does tend to stop working.

Primark Cogsworth Clock Back

I’m not sure if this problem is a manufacturing issue or if it is just mine that has faults but as I collect Disney pieces anyway I aren’t that bothered by it as I display it with my other Beauty and the Beast items.

Another thing I think could be better is the open back that displays the battery, I think if it was covered it would look like a more expensive piece rather than just having a big cut out in the back of his head.

I just have to get the Lumiere tealight candle holder to complete my collection but I am unsure whether or not it has been discontinued.

Let me know in the comments if you’d like to see more Disney posts from me!

American Apparel Re-launches in the UK

Former cult brand American Apparel re-launched this week in the UK, the company has had a fully re-branded makeover and is staying away from overly sexualised images which saw the previous company director Dov Charney face many cases of sexual harassment. Here’s a previous post on their Controversal Campaigns.

The new owners Guildan Activewear Inc, a Canadian-American manufacture have decided there’s nothing wrong with advertising the clothes in a ‘sexy’ way it’s just how that sexy comes across which is important, it’s not about sexualising the models it’s about empowering them.  It’s refreshing to see that they do not agree with how the company was formally represented, this is how they used to try and appeal to consumers with their Back to School Campaign.

American Apparel Nylon Tricot Cropped Tank Top

As before the models are ordinary people, not professionals and are from a wide background of different cultures, diversities and sizes. The photos are also unedited which is great because it means that there won’t be any photo-shopped images and shows a true representation of the products and people. It doesn’t matter whether you have stretch-marks or acne etc… it will not be edited out like it’s a problem or like ‘perfection’ needs to be put out there in order to sell the clothes.

“Our customer has never really cared about the ‘American’ in American Apparel because it was made in America. They’ve always cared about American Apparel because it stands for certain values of authenticity, diversity and ethical manufacturing and we keep all of those values now, even though we are not necessarily made in the US,” says Silvia Mazzucchelli, vice-president, direct to consumer. (Theguardian.com)

American Apparel Denim Lace Back Dress

I am not 100% sure if that statement is true about the customers but in my opinion I thought it was great that the products were produced in America and boosted the job trade over there, far too many companies import now.  There is the option to purchase the American made version or globally made one, of course the global one is cheaper in price.

Do you like how the company has re-branded?

Will it gain cult status again?
